1 【舐める】 〔舌で〕 lick; lap; suck; 〔味わう〕 taste.

3 【舐める】 〔炎が及ぶ〕 《flames》 lick (at, up); burn (up).

●なめ尽くす lick [burn] up; devour.

●火はたちまちのうちに数棟をなめ尽くした. The flames licked up [wiped out, devoured] a row of buildings in a second.

・窓から出た炎がちろちろと軒をなめ始めた. Flames came out of the window and began to lick at the overhanging eaves.

4 【舐める】 〔侮る〕 treat sb like a fool; disparage; make light of sb; hold sb cheap [in contempt]; look down on sb.

●初めから相手をなめてかかる regard one's opponent with contempt from the outset; hold one's opponent lightly from the start

・なめた態度を取る take a contemptuous [disparaging] attitude

・なめた口をきく speak in a tone of disparagement.

●素人だと思ってなめるなよ. Don't look down your nose at me because you think I'm an amateur.

・なめてかかると痛い目にあうぞ. If you take it [him] lightly, you're going to wind up getting burned [being sorry].
